Rachel Barduhn

The Oath of Mother Nature

As I step forward,

the flowers beneath my soles begin to sprout.

Sadly, they crumble after blooming.

I’m full of life inside and out.

However, the colour of my raw green skin

has faded to brown.

I weave leaves and blossoms

together to craft my gown.

But the strength of the stems

will snap the moment they bend.

My hair carries the weight

of humanity in its locs.

The devastation of this earth

is weakening my every step.

As every blade of grass,

flowing river,

peaking mountain,

and the air is all part of me.

There’s only so much I can handle

when they disregard my protectors

to fill their stomachs and pockets

by stealing more than they need.

I’m trying with every ounce

of my power to hold life together.

Even as we draw our final conclusion, know this:

“When humans cease to exist, nature shall prevail.”
